18 Month Update!

Hi everyone, sorry for the 6 month hiatus, Life with a toddler certainly is different to life with a newborn, and the time has just flown by.

Nearly saying words: Liam;s been attempting to say things like “ear”, “light,” and he now says mamma and dadda repeditively. His first repeated words besides mama and dadda were “toot toot” and “uh oh.”

Liam can now also:

Wave “bye bye”

Hi-five

point to his head and tummy, and tries to point to eyes, ears and nose but gets mixed up.

point and gesture to what he wants

climb off of the change table

Fetch items such as ball, nappy, shoe, toy, etc.

running

walking backwards

open and close his drink bottle cap

helping stack and unstack the dishwasher

can place objects in the bin and washing basket (and toilet)

Understand words and small phrases like “bath” “eat” “car”, “we’re going”, “drink it”, “no / don’t”, “yeah,” “come on,” “go’, etc.

learning to spit food out

learning to throw a ball forwards

on the brink of learning to kick

can turn around in a circle

retaining memory of slippery floors, and dangerous places; for instance he is super careful around door frames, steps, and in the shower and bathroom area when the floor is wet, and if there are obstacles in his way or narrow walking spaces he will run up to them, then carefully wonder through, then run again.

Liam can pick up and place down objects skillfully now, and he knows himself in a mirror, photo, or film clip.
He could pick up a 3L milk for a few seconds.
he is currently in size 0 clothing, but can fit anything from 00 to 2. Most size 0 and 1 pants fall off of him though.

he is starting to ge tthe concept of a spoon / fork now.
He has also learned that things can inside of other things, etc.
His artistic side is starting to emerge, he can draw lines and dots now with paints, pencils, paints and chalk, and he is definately right handed!
He can walk up steps with assistance (hand hold) or else he crawls up them.
He is also starting to take an interest in dressing and undressing himself, but can’t do these tasks yet.

he has recently had his first temper tantrum, and it seems that his security is his bottle of milk and a dummy.
he has also wanted to co-sleep with us now, and has a fear of being left alone with the door shut.
we’ve been trying to stacking cups games lately, which he loves, and he is sometimes fussy with food, now refusing salad items and chewy / textured or larger foods.

He has one nap a day now most of the time, and currently attends occasional care without Michael or I once a week, and also attends a playgroup weekjly with us there. he doesnt seem to have any issues at all with others, or with us playing with other kids, or even with us leaving!

If we tell him to pick something up or get doen, he usually does.
he can dance if we say dance (by bouncing), and I got him a baby born doll with a bottle that he likes to play with and feed. sometimes he also offers the doll his dummy. I’ve also been using it to show him nappy changes, etc.
he can get in and out of his toy car and his toy trike now (pedal toys) and he has a small playgym in the back yard, which he is hesitant to play with unless we are there with him.

he can ‘brush’ his teeth, turn taps on, lift the toilet lid, etc, close doors, and climb onto tables from other objects. he can now easily climb up onto his chair, and his booster seat on a chair, etc. he is almost tall enough to reach light switches, and understands what they are for. If we say “light” he will look at the light.

he is still very musical and seems disinterested in cars and other boyish things.
His favourite song is still the fox song, and he also likes Justine Clarke, The Wiggles, Matilda songs, small Potatoes, Big Block Sing Song, and Baby Jake.

1 Year Update!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIAM!

We can’t believe Liam is already a year old! He’s walking pretty confidently now, and has been for at least a month or two – we think he started walking around October – will confirm that and update soon. Liam weaned himself off of breastmilk altogether at 11 months. At the time he had a cold, and 2 weeks or so later his first 2 teeth came in (bottom front) so that may have had something to do with it. I haven’t completely dried up yet, and am considering switching to cows milk and adding some of my milk to boost the vitamins in there.

He’s in between size 00 and 0 clothes at the moment, but really he’d still be a 00. size 1’s are absolutely swimming on him. He’s having 3 meals a day now and there’s not much food he hasn’t tried honestly. He has quite a diverse pallate, and even likes raw onion, lemon, very hot salami, vindaloo, and chili! he has an aversion to mustard though 😛 He has 2 naps a day (but sometimes goes without one of them,) and has on average 2x 260ml bottles of formula, and water with most meals.

This month (besides the mountain of work I’ve been catching up on, I’ve been working hard on updating the baby book, now that just about finished with, and keeping on top of Liam’s milestones / my “good things” journal which I’ve successfully updated daily for the whole year 🙂 For his second year I’m aiming to do a photo a day journal – which will be a whole lot tougher!

Some other things Liam is doing include:

CLIMBING
learning to climb – he can currently climb the ottoman with enough determination, and has been seen climbing on toys, boxes, and cushions to try to get higher. He can’t quite get onto the couch from the floor unless the cushions are off or loose, and he can now climb up the couch arm rest from the seat part.
He’s also learning to climb the wrong way up a slide. He still crawls through doorways that are raised / lowered from the ground, and he’s trying to do headstands or summersaults it seems.

EXPLORING

He’s always picking up everything and exploring by touch, and his mouth – even rummaging in drawers now and learning to open cupboards and sliding doors. we are constantly telling him off for exploring the bin!

WANTING TO PLAY WITH ELECTRONICS
It’s funny because his dad is always playing with electronics, and did the same at Liam’s age. I’m not sure if he’s just copying or if he’s actually attracted to technology – it’s as if he knows what the things are for…

BABBLING
He has lots of new sounds – so many that I can’t write them all down or remember them all. 4 very recent ones are “baba”, “nan”, “nay” and “gah.” We think he’s on the verge of saying “no.”

USING TOOTHPASTE AND BRUSH

He’s now regularly using a tooth brush and actually has 2 of them now 🙂 We are getting him into the habit of brushing at least 1-2 times per day, and have just started baby toothpaste. He doesn’t usually like it, but what kid does?

USING A PILLOW

We noticed that when Liam was tired in the lounge room he would find a cushion and lay on it, so now he has his own thin monster pillow in the cot since his birthday.

FEEDING HIMSELF
Liam is now a very confident eater, and is trying to feed himself with a spoon. Sometimes he will refuse us feeding him because he wants to do it himself, so we try to give him a spoon to hold as we feed him, and when there’s not much left we guide his hand to let him try it himself. I’ve also been occasionally feeding him with a baby fork, and this week I’ve even used adult spoons once or twice. He knows how to drink from his water bottle with a straw, as long as the cap is open, though he can’t always remember that he needs to lie down to drink his bottles as he can’t hold the bottle high enough for the liquid to fall to the teat if he isn’t laying down. His next foodie challenge is tackling spaghetti strands. He laughs out loud now when he sees me slurping up spaghetti strand by strand.

He can now suck through regular straws, and can blow bubbles in drinks on occasion, but he’s starting to prefer other drinks to water, and will often refuse his water bottle now, or spit the water out and laugh. He loves milk based drinks, and the taste of coffee and chocolaty drinks – not that he’s ever had his own, or had much / had them often. He did try his first slushie in November and he LOVED it.

READING
Liam loves reading, opening books, and has just this week learnt to pull tabs and lift flaps.

MAKING MUSIC
Liam still loves music. This month he’s learnt to shake a maraca, bang a drum, and even strum a ukelele 🙂

PLAYING WITH WATER
He loves all things water, and bath time. The funniest thing he does in water is drink from the tap extension 😛

PLAYING WITH BLOCKS
He’s learnt to knock my block towers over – which he finds hilarious, and he can stick 2 bits of leggo together and take them apart now.

SHOWING AFFECTION

He’s really become social, and has little games he plays with people, like tilting his head to the side and wanting others to reciprocate, playing peek-a-boo, and blowing raspberries on people (especially my upper arm).

CLAPPING
He can clap now, and has just mastered Hi-fiving 🙂 Next steps are waving and baby sign language 🙂

BEING MORE TICKLISH

He realizes now that tickling is a game, so he reacts to chin, arm and feet tickles sometimes now, as well as just his belly.

HAVING REGULAR PLAYDATES

Liam’s having play dates with our photography clients. We’ve made a friend or two from the business, and he now sees a little girl called Marrissa about once a week / fortnight at a local play cafe 🙂 He also now interacts and plays with our little neighbours about once a fortnight. I’m hoping to start up a kids music group in Feb to get him some more kids to play with.

FAVOURITE COLOUR

We think it’s yellow at the moment

FAVOURITE SHAPE
Seems to be a circle / round

RIGHTY OR LEFTY?
I used to think lefty but now I’m thinkin’ righty.

WEIGHT
8.8kg(ish)

HEIGHT

77cm

8 & 9 Month Update

Liam is now crawling somewhat with ease, which he’s been doing since August 21st, (just after he turned 8 months old), and he has recently began to pull himself into standing using certain objects (since September 1st). Hubby says that earlier this week he pulled himself all the way up onto a couch backrest from the floor!

He has pulled himself to standing with no aids a handful of times.

This week Liam has started to furiously screech and scream when he wants a bottle, and we’ve experienced the first of the temper tantrums, so we are beginning to use firm voice and tone, and simple discipline now.

5th Aug – Liam began Army crawling. Liam is now climbing all over the change table, so changing him is proving a chore now, and I;ve had to find new and creative ways to change him.

Liam’s best chance of breastfeeding is just after he wakes up.

He’s in a few routines now, such as wake up, wake us up by climbing all over us in bed, breastfeed, a quick play, breakfast in high chair with water and brushing of gums – which this week he’s started to want to do himself now, bath / change, play in playpen or jolly jumper, lunch, nap, dinner, play, watch tv with us, bed.

Liam’s grown some hair now. Its still very short, but its there. He now enjoys rhaspberry games and “where’s Liam” games. He’s in 00 and wears crawler nappes. On 2s6 Progress formula – we are just moving to toddler, but are finding it causes diorhea.

first illness: bronchitis – 5th of August.

Liam learnt to take his dummy out and put it back in around the 3rd of August.

Liam was baptized under Christianity: 22nd August 2015

Yesterday Liam’s bum was wiped on the toilet for the first time – prior to bathing.

7 Month Update

The most exciting things about this month’s update is that Liam has begun baby babbling, and said “Hello” one day before he turned 7 months old 🙂 Since then he’s been extremely talkative, especially babbling to us on the change table, and saying “bla bla”.

(on the 20th of July Liam woke us up by saying “Hello Dada,” it was just about the cutest thing ever!

Liam is now able to sit up for about 5 minutes or more unassisted, and he’s finally growing hair.
He’s extremely socially aware, and smiles when people look at him. around the same time he began babbling, Liam began screetching to get attention, unfortunately. often we now have to physically restrain him for a few minutes to calm him down during breast feeding, etc.

Liam’s rolling ALL OVER THE FLOOR! we’re now taking the first steps to babyproofing.

Liam tried rockmelon
Liam tried frankfurt
Liam tried a chocolate chip
Liam tried Lamb
Liam tried Quinoa
Liam tried bread, and cheese
Liam tried spring roll
Liam learnt to suck on a straw and sippy cup
Liam tried Apple and Oatmeal
Liam ate his first spaghetti strand and tasted mince with bolognaise sauce sauce

Liam weighs 7.6kg (I think)
Liam is now front facing in the car seat! (from 21/7/15)

My periods stopped this month, and now I’m about as far through my cycle as I was when we found ut we were pregnant with Liam 97 wks along), though I’ve had a negative blood test for pregnancy, 3 negative home urine tests, and an ultrasound that showed nothing abnormal (as in a cyst or pregnancy, for example,) so I have no idea what’s happening! I even had phantom kicks during this time, and chronic fatigue.

4 Month Update! (17 Weeks)

Right now Liam is 121 days old! (That’s 17 Weeks and 2 Days!)

MILESTONES
Liam is now able to grasp things quite well for 1-2 minutes at a time when he wants to – such as a spoon, a piece of paper, page of a book (he can turn pages now.), a small toy, his hand, or someone elses fingers. He LOVES standing up, and will hapoily stand up assisted or in his jolly jumper for 10 mins or so at a time. He’s much more able to hold his head up, and is doing mini crunches by lifting up his head when lying on his back. He can now roll back to side!

Still wearing 000, and wearing size 1 shoes already!?!

He is now 63 cm tall and weighs 5.8kg.

He loves watching people, tv, moving objects, and toys. He absolutely LOVES music!

He’s much more responsive to games, social smiles, and people talking to him. He smiles and laughs regularly now.

If he wants to be picked up he now reaches out his arms, and when he is being changed he will now lift his legs up ready for the new nappy to go under his bottom.

He’s much more talkative now, and he’s coming up with new sounds and noises each day. Some of his newest are “Yeah”, “B”, “he,” full on laughter, squealing, “ng”, random vowel shapes, humming and general cooing, blowing tiny raspberries, blowing on fingers and hands when he doesn’t want them in his mouth. He especially loves people saying “yeah”, and “heh heh heh” to him.

His is awake quite frequently now, and can drink 260ml plus breast milk in a sitting happily if he’s hungry enough!

Solids tried;
Broccoli Stalks – Had a full baby bowl full and loved it.
Banana – had a piece of overripe banana about 2-3cm in size.
Cooked potato – a tiny piece of fluffy potato out of an oven baked chip.
Coffee- drank 2-3 decent gulps and loved it.

Chicken – Tasted – Loved it
Peri Peri Sauce – Tasted – Loved it
Vanilla Ice Cream – Tasted – Liked it
Carrot stick – Tasted – Liked it

Red Onion – Tasted – Hated it
Hot Salami – Tasted – Hated it

Lemon – Tasted – Didn’t mind it
Mozarella Cheese – Tasted
Burbon – Tasted
Pink Lemonade – Tasted

We have put his baby bowls, storage food pots, and baby cutlery in the kitchen ready for when he starts solids properly.

He has the same rough sleep / eat feed, though his milk demands have definitely skyrocketed. His poo is more smelly – usually a greeny dark brown colour, though it was like a creamy light brown / cream colour the last 2 times :S

Still breastfeeding with bottle topups, sometimes he refuses the breast (which he’s done at least 3 times.) Once a nipple shield was my saving grace, once I had to give him a bottle of expressed breast milk first, and once I just waited ’till he was too hungry to refuse.

He was sleeping in the co-sleeper until we felt that he outgrew it (he was able to get his legs over the sides) so now he mostly sleeps in his bassinet in the cot, or in our bed between us, since the risk for SIDS is now much lower.

He has definitely discovered his body parts – such as hands, fingers, feet, and he’s beginning to discover his penis.

Work is ramping up even more now – I quit Fridays at Music Corner and already I’ve almost filled my allocated capacity – so much so that I have to turn students away on Thursdays! I’m considering opening up Wednesdays, and in 2 weeks I’m picking up another 12-16 students!

We’re going to make a desk-top computer for me so I can vlog edit, as my laptop isn’t powerful enough to do that, and we bought more storage space for my vlogs. I’m heavily considering signing up to www.audioblocks.com so I can incorporate royalty-free sounds into my vlogs.

– TMI ALERT –
I got my first post-birth period a week ago. It was much lighter than my normal ones, and only lasted 3 days as opposed to the usual five. I only got very mild period pains “the brick” for about 30 mins, as opposed to my usual 2-3 days.

I’m also shedding hair like crazy! (I estimate I’m losing around 50 odd hairs per day, and I’m having to clean the shower drains once a week due to hair blockages!) Apparently this is a normal post-birth symptom I wasn’t aware of. Apparently it happens because we don’t shed hair during pregnancy, and then estrogen levels plummet once bubs arrives, causing the hair loss. Apparently I’ll keep losing my hair until Liam is 6 months to a year old. OH JOY! 😐

Some new baby games we’ve tried this month:
-Maneuvering Liam to sit and stand
-“Peekaboo” variants
-“Sh sh sh sh whooooooooooooooosh” as we go from far to close to his face, or as we hide and come back, or as he is lifted up and down over our heads, etc.
-Various games touching him, singing songs, and making noises for various body parts.
-Trying to teach Liam that he is Liam, and we are “Mummy” and “Daddy”.
-Baby conversations – copying his babble, and initiating and holding “conversations” with him.
-Putting him in his chair on the Lazy Susan and rocking ottoman
-Bouncing him up and down
-Lifting him in the air and bringing him back down
-Getting him to touch various things

3 Month Update! (13 Weeks)

Right now Liam is 89 days 25 hours 34 minutes and 9 seconds old!

MILESTONES
This month he has been learning to grasp things and play with his hands, he’s learnt to suck on his fingers and hands, how to poke out his tongue (sometimes) and he is much more smiley! He is able to sustain tummy time now for 5-10 minutes at a time before getting frustrated and upset.

He is getting more confident at standing, and has even taken his first assisted steps during week 12! (The 15th of March.) Since then he’s been absolutely loving standing up and trying to walk!

Grown out of 0000 for the most part because his feet and legs were too tall / big, so he’s mainly wearing 000 now.

Had his first official home height chart measurement – 60cm.

Beginning to take an interest in toys.

Rolled belly to back at 12 weeks.

He can just about hold his head up without needing much support at all now, and can lift his head when laying about 3 inches, and hold it for about 3 seconds. (When left alone in unsupported sitting he still flops forward or to the side.)

Stops crying and smiles if I go near him, or pick him up most of the time.

making a few new sounds – Hubby said he heard Liam say “Hi” on March 17.

According to BabyCenter, he should have full ability to focus!

Went cloud watching in the back yard for the first time

Experienced grass and rain. Continue reading »
